So 'Bama won the BCS National Championship, 37-21. Texas QB, Colt McCoy suffered a shoulder injury during the second drive of the game, meaning that the game was now in the hands of their true freshman, Garrett Gilbert. I felt awful for this poor kid. He got absolutely slaughtered during the first half, throwing something like -4 yards and 2 interceptions, one of which was brought back by Marcell Dareus for a touchdown with 3 seconds left in the half. If I were Gilbert and I heard that McCoy was going to be out the rest of the game, I would have snuck out the back door and never looked back. But apparently this little 18 year old has more balls than I do. He came out and made it a game. He threw 2 touchdown passes and a 2-point conversion, closing 'Bama's lead to 24-21 with about 6 minutes to go in the 4th. Yes, Texas came back with 2 more touchdowns before the end of the game but Gilbert played one hell of a second half, especially for someone who had only thrown 26 passes in college prior to the game. The other person who needs attention is Alabama's Mark Ingram. He had a great game with 116 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also gets placed on the very short list of people who have won the Heisman and the National Championship the same year. My biggest problem with the game was how announcer Brent Musberger insisted on bringing up Ingram's "incarcerated father" and showing his mother (pointing her out each time as if we had forgotten) everytime Ingram touched the ball. Not only did he bring Ingram Sr. up, he felt it necessary to glorify the situation as if it was a heart warming story--the guy is in prison for fraud and money laundering. I really wish I had counted how many times Brent brought it up.
Onto the NFL
So the regular season is over and we are now one week into the playoffs.
50% of the Wild-Card Round games were decided the week before. The Jets beat the Bengals again 24-14 (this time in Cincy) and the Cowboys blew out the Eagles again in Dallas (34-14). The Cardinals-Packers game was another repeat of last week but atleast the outcome was different; the game even went into overtime.
The game I paid the most attention to (besides the game I will get into in a bit) was the Jets game. Brian and I were on vacation in the Poconos and since he is a HUGE Jets fan, we obviously had to watch the game. Despite starting out on top, the Bengals reverted to their former selves, the Bungels. Leading this movement was Shayne Graham, the soon-to-be former kicker for the Bengals. Aren't they glad they franchised him before the season? Looks like they should have signed that kicker from Wake Forest, Sam Swank, who was kicking for them during preseason.
Does everyone remember how Ochocinco said he would change his name if Revis shut him down during the last game of the regular season? Even though Ochocinco was shut down, he was injured and didn't really play, so I let it slide..but, I most definitely carried over his promise to the Wild-Card game. As a result, I will only refer to him as Chad Johnson now since Revis did indeed, shut him down the whole game.
Before I move on I need to mention how absolutely awful Joe Gibbs and Joe Theismann were as announcers. Just appalling. They botched names, Gibbs would just trail off on tangents, and Theismann wouldn't shut the hell up. Please, NBC, I'm begging you, never have them on again!
Oh yes, about the other game. As you can see from my previous post (and you could probably have guessed), I was not happy...to say the least.
Going into the game, I still wasn't over Wes Welker (my favorite player) tearing his ACL and MCL during the last week of the regular season. After seeing Lil' Welker (Edelman) play against Houston, it gave me some hope. Obviously, it wasn't Edelman that I should have been nervous about. IT WAS THE REST OF THE GOD DAMN TEAM! I have never cursed so much in my life. Seriously. By half time, I had given up hope and had become a profanity spewing, negative ball of anger. Not even my doggie could make me feel better (yes, she's older now but she's just as cute so you can see how she could make almost everyone feel better). There is always next year right? As a result of the massacre that happened at 1, I could not pay a whole lot of attention to the Green Bay-Arizona game. I've seen the highlights and I do believe that there were a whole lot of personal fouls that should have been called, and perhaps that would have changed the game..who knows.
In regards to the Eagles..that's what you get for signing a dog killer.
